The National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity that transforms lives through literacy.

One in six people in the UK struggle to read and write. Poor skills compromise health, confidence, happiness and employability.

The National Literacy Trust believes that literacy transforms lives, and that with better literacy, everyone can succeed in life. By ‘better literacy’, they mean the combination of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills necessary for a fair chance in life. They believe that society will only be fair when everyone can communicate as well as they need. They believe that with better literacy skills a greater number of people will have the opportunity to contribute more to society.

The NLT’s work:

The NLT campaigns to improve public understanding of the vital importance and impact of literacy. They use careful, targeted communication to encourage individuals in most need of support to understand the importance of literacy in their lives and to inspire them to overcome their own anxieties or prejudices about literacy.

The NLT supports those trying to improve their literacy through projects, networks and communities across the UK and they deliver projects and programmes.

They investigate and innovate, conducting research to improve and measure the effectiveness of services and support for people who need help with literacy.

At the NLT we work in partnership, bringing together key organisations to lead literacy promotion in the UK, and they share their knowledge as widely as possible.
